We analyzed Thailand Rent-a-Car’s completed rentals from the previous two high seasons, as well as early bookings for the coming winter. The main conclusion is simple: if you need a specific vehicle, airport delivery, or a car during the Christmas and New Year period, booking after arrival may be too late.

When Does Phuket’s High Season Begin?

The transition to high season normally starts in October and November. Rainfall gradually decreases, sea conditions become calmer, and the number of visitors rises.

November to April is generally considered the best period for visiting Phuket and other destinations on Thailand’s Andaman coast. The Tourism Authority of Thailand also recommends these months for trips to Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands.

The 2026–2027 season can be divided into several periods:

• October and early November: a transitional period with occasional heavy rain;

• late November and December: rapidly increasing visitor numbers;

• Christmas, New Year, and January: peak demand;

• February and March: consistently busy high-season months;

• April: hot weather, Songkran celebrations, and the end of the winter season.

Tropical showers can still occur during the dry season. Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast before a long drive and allow extra travel time during bad weather.

What Our Rental Statistics Show

We analyzed anonymized data from completed rentals between October and March during the previous two high seasons.

Around two-thirds of completed rentals were for comfort-class cars. These vehicles are the most common choice for couples, solo travelers, and small families.

Crossovers accounted for approximately 17% of completed rentals, while minivans represented about 12%. Crossovers and SUVs were generally rented for longer periods, averaging around nine to ten days.

A typical high-season rental lasts approximately one week. The median rental period was six days, while the average was slightly more than eight days. The difference is explained by longer bookings lasting two weeks or more.

Our statistics also show that demand during the previous winter season was considerably higher than one year earlier. Rental activity was particularly strong from October through March.

Travelers Are Already Booking the New Season

The first reservations for the 2026–2027 season appeared well before the beginning of autumn. At the time of publication, confirmed bookings already extend through October, November, December, and January.

Early booking patterns show that:

• October trips may be reserved several months ahead;

• November rentals are often booked around three months in advance;

• December cars may be reserved four to five months ahead;

• some January bookings are made almost six months before arrival.

Winter rentals also tend to be longer. Among the reservations already placed for November through January, a typical rental lasts approximately 11–14 days.

This does not mean that every vehicle will be unavailable one week before arrival. However, the choice of models, vehicle categories, delivery options, and rental terms will be more limited.

When Should You Book a Car in Phuket?

The best booking time depends on your travel dates, vehicle category, and number of passengers.

If you need a specific model, a seven-seat vehicle, a child seat, or collection immediately after an international flight, consider booking an additional two to four weeks earlier.

Advance reservations are especially important for families and larger groups. Seven seats do not necessarily mean that the luggage compartment can accommodate seven suitcases. Tell the rental company how many passengers, suitcases, strollers, and other large items you will have before confirming the vehicle.

Which Cars Are Most Popular in Phuket?

Comfort-class vehicles remain the most popular option. They are suitable for Phuket’s paved roads, everyday trips between beaches, shopping, and airport transfers.

Consider booking a crossover if:

• you are traveling with children;

• you have several large suitcases;

• your accommodation is located on a steep road;

• you plan to drive between different parts of the island every day;

• you prefer a higher seating position and more interior space.

A minivan is a practical option for a larger family or group of friends. However, fewer seven-seat vehicles are available, so they should normally be booked earlier than compact cars.

At the beginning of September, the Thailand Rent-a-Car catalog included more than 40 bookable vehicles from the 2024–2026 model years. The fleet primarily consists of comfort-class cars, together with crossovers, SUVs, and minivans. Actual availability always depends on the selected dates.

Phuket Is Preparing for Another Busy Season

Phuket International Airport provides self-check-in kiosks, automated bag-drop services, and biometric passenger identification. Travelers can collect a rental car after making an advance reservation and receiving meeting-point instructions.

The island’s international route network also continued to expand in 2026. A new direct service between Ho Chi Minh City and Phuket, operating four times a week, was launched in July.

Traffic becomes heavier during high season, particularly near the airport, Patong, Kata, Karon, and Phuket Town. Allow additional time when traveling to Bang Tao, Rawai, Nai Harn, or other parts of the island, especially in the evening and during busy international arrival periods.

What Information Should You Provide When Booking?

To help the rental company select an appropriate vehicle and arrange a smooth handover, provide:

• rental dates and exact collection time;

• flight number;

• collection and return locations;

• number of passengers;

• number and size of suitcases;

• child-seat requirements;

• number of drivers;

• expected travel routes.

If your flight arrives late at night or early in the morning, confirm after-hours collection in advance. Providing your flight number also helps the manager monitor delays and adjust the meeting time.
