Kaliningrad Enters Russia’s Top 10 Destinations for the 2026 Velvet Season
Kaliningrad has entered the ten most popular Russian destinations for the 2026 velvet season, the country’s early-autumn travel period. According to booking service Otello, the city accounts for 1.7% of accommodation bookings from early September to mid-October, Vedomosti.Gorod reports.
The figure shows Kaliningrad’s position in the current booking mix, but it does not by itself prove a sharp year-on-year surge. Interest in the region nevertheless remains strong: the Kaliningrad Region welcomed about 2.5 million visitors in 2025, up 13.4% from the previous year.
Why autumn works well for a visit
Tourist demand is distributed more evenly in autumn than in summer. In 2025, autumn represented 24% of bookings in the Kaliningrad Region, compared with 35% in summer. The shoulder season may therefore feel calmer for sightseeing and road trips, although popular locations can still be busy at weekends.
Airfares may be lower on selected September or weekday departures, but this is not a universal rule for every origin city. Prices depend on the route, baggage and booking window, so travellers should compare their exact dates instead of relying on a general promise of cheaper tickets.
What to see in Kaliningrad and the region
Kaliningrad: the Cathedral, Kant Island and the Fishing Village make a practical first-day itinerary that does not depend on beach weather.
Zelenogradsk: this Baltic seaside resort is ideal for a relaxed walk and can serve as a starting point for a trip to the Curonian Spit.
Svetlogorsk: another atmospheric coastal resort known for historic architecture and walking routes.
The Viking village of Kaup: visitors can explore a reconstructed early medieval settlement and row the Vindur, a replica Viking longship. Kaup opens only on event days, so check the schedule before travelling.

How to plan the trip by car
A car is useful for combining the regional capital with the Baltic coast without depending on excursion timetables. A simple three-day itinerary could be:
