Phuket’s Freedom Beach Remains Closed Due to Rough Sea Conditions

As of Sep 4, 2026, Freedom Beach in Phuket remains closed until further notice. Entry to the closed recreation area and swimming are prohibited because strong wind and rough sea conditions pose a danger to visitors.

The extension was announced on September 3. The Phuket News, citing the Freedom Beach Recreation Area and Patong Municipality, reported that officials will assess the sea and weather every day. Reopening will be considered only after conditions become safe.

The area was initially closed in August following the death of a tourist during rough sea conditions. An official statement from Thailand’s Royal Forest Department confirms that the temporary closure order for the Freedom Beach recreation area was signed on Aug 11, 2026. The restriction covered entry and water activities during hazardous monsoon conditions.

Caution is also necessary at other beaches on Phuket’s west coast. The Thai Meteorological Department forecast for September 4 included isolated heavy rain in Phuket and waves of about two metres north of the island, rising above two metres in thunderstorms. Conditions at an individual beach can change quickly.

Visitors should:

• not attempt to enter Freedom Beach before an official reopening;

• never swim where red flags are displayed or lifeguards prohibit entry;

• check the weather immediately before travelling;

• choose another beach or an inland activity instead of looking for an unofficial access route;

• call 191 or 1669 in an emergency, or 1155 for Tourist Police and language assistance.

Drivers planning a day trip should check the destination and parking before leaving. Until authorities publish a new notice, Freedom Beach should be removed from the day’s itinerary.
